Project M Application

Yesterday I realized that I hadn’t challenged or pushed myself outside of my work on Holstee in a good while. I saw a tweet from good friend Brian Jones – the timing could not have been better. Working late into the night last night, I finished my application video (above) for Project M.

About Project M:

Project M will encourage and provide techniques for thinking wrong as a way to generate new ideas and design directions. The human brain tends to think along predetermined linear thought pathways. Such linear thinking can inhibit true innovation and creative exploration.

While I have never had any formal design training, it has always been a passion of mine. The chance to challenge and explore new approaches to design surrounded by other curious folks over in Frankfurt, Germany sounds perfect. Would also be a great chance to put my German to use!

The costs of the two weeks are fully covered by a generous donor, with the exception of travel to and from Frankfurt. If accepted, I suppose the first creative challenge is to find a way to pay for my flights :-)

3Face

3 Face PaintingHere is my latest creation. I painted it about 2 months ago. Like my last canvas, i was given this blank canvas as a gift and i had no idea what to paint. then i decided that i wanted to do an image across 3 canvases. I am horrible at staying in the lines when it comes to painting, to be honest I really dont know how to paint, or if theres a certain technique i should use. In this paitning i used mostly my fingers, a sponge, and the point of some scissors. I am really glad with the outcome, but it is not at all what i originally had in mind. Whenever I paint though, it is always like that. I will paint, mess up, then figure some way to cover it up, and I am always more happy with the new look compared to my original idea. Like pretty much everything I have painted to date (here, and here) there is a lot of texture which u cant really see in the foto. Im not sure exactly why i love texture, but I am pretty sure it has something to do with the fact that in museums u are not allowed to touch paintings, in my opinion touching is one of the coolest aspects when enjoying art.

home sweet home

my latest painting. gave it as a house warming present to a friend that moved into a new apt. the dots reminded me of those candy dots that used to be super popular. hence the “sweet” factor in home “sweet” home. foto didnt come out great but i think it captured the idea.

handmade leather

so i just finished the latest project i was working on. I hand made a leather journal as well as a small pouch to hold pens….i think they came out pretty good. sewing leather is a lot harder than it sounds…fingers are killing me. but it was worth it. also it ended up costing more than expected…but again i think it was worth it.

artistic expression

some random paintings i made. the ones made in in NY were made about 4 months ago. the one painting made in providence was made about 3 years ago. i like painting beacuase it forces you to think creatively. if someone puts a peice of canvas infront of you and says no strings attached paint something. and you had to paint something what would u paint?

for my ny paintings i tried to use substances to make the images more 3d. i used some type of texturizing paing (it made the paint sand papery) and for 2 of the paintings i used plaster.

first: actual outline of my foot. this painting was made in NY.

second: my favorite. it has much more flavor in person but the picture gets the point across.

third: this one was fun too. i actually did this one second in the ny collection after the foot and before the maze. i wasnt satisfied with it though so i went back and worked on it after. much happier with the final result.

fourth: i made this in providence after returning from the euro trip. during the eurotrip we visited a ton of art gallerys and museums and i was inspired. i had outlined this picture. and i told my self i would paint it. this painting isnt my fav as i like abstract stuff more, but i still like it and i am glad i painted it exactly as i had outlined on the trip.

it pretty interesting to see how the painting stye and influence changed over the few years…the ones i made in ny are currently being stored/displayed in my bros apt in sty town.
